Justin Herbert expected to start Sunday vs. Kansas City: report

Justin Herbert continues to deal with a severe ankle sprain, but the injury is not expected to prevent him from starting on Sunday. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback is expected to start against Kansas City unless it suffers a pregame setback.

Herbert originally suffered the injury during the Chargers’ 26-3 win in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers, but he didn’t miss a beat and finished the game. He wasn’t so lucky against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3. The injury aggravated again when he was sacked in the third quarter, limped off the field and did not return in the 20-10 loss.

Herbert wore a walking boot after the game and has had limited training over the past week. With a bye week coming up in Week 5, there was talk of Herbert sitting out the game against Kansas City to give his ankle some extra rest. Herbert said the ankle was progressing throughout the week and sitting out was not in his plans.

Herbert played well against the Steelers before the injury aggravated again. He completed 12 of 18 passes for 125 passes with one touchdown and no turnovers. However, his mobility was significantly limited against a strong Pittsburgh defense.

Kansas City’s defense isn’t as tenacious as the Steelers’, but defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolu is an aggressive player and it’s likely Kansas City will go after Herbert. Los Angeles is ranked seventh in rushing in the NFL. So look for coach Jim Harbaugh to put more effort into the rushing attack to keep his struggling quarterback out of harm’s way.
