Julie Foudy, women’s soccer commentator at the Paris Olympics, rants about player safety – NBC Chicago

A football commentator took the unusual step of criticising organisers of the Paris Olympics on Sunday, criticising the decision to host the tournaments in different cities across France and arguing that “dangerous” players were not being given enough time to recover.

Julie Foudy, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and women’s soccer commentator for NBC’s coverage of the Paris Olympics, went on a rant as the U.S. women’s soccer team faced Brazil in the gold medal game.

Foudy explained that the teams only have two rest days – one of which includes travel.

“That’s too much to ask of these players,” she said. “It’s ridiculous what they’re asking of them and I think it’s dangerous when you see a stretcher carrying it away.”

Sophia Smith of Team USA scored the first and only goal of the semifinal in overtime. It was the second time in Olympic history that a women’s semifinal match was scoreless after 90 minutes.

However, Foudy made some suggestions: For example, increasing the roster size and allowing all 22 team members to play, rather than what she called a “ridiculous” backup role.

“Player safety should be the number one priority in all of this,” she said. “We have 16 teams and I say the same for the men’s team.”

The women’s competition at the Olympics is organized in the same way as FIFA tournaments: Two teams of 11 players each play a 90-minute match divided into two 45-minute halves on a grass pitch, according to the Olympics website. The same rules apply to the men’s games, but with a slight difference in the composition of the teams.
