Josh Hull: Leicestershire’s England nomination is limitless

The man who helped oversee the development of Josh Hull, who has recently been called up to the England national team, is convinced that there are no limits for the seamer from Leicestershire.

Hull was surprisingly included in England’s Test and white-ball teams, despite the club having played only ten first-class matches in the second division.

The 20-year-old attended the Leicestershire Academy, where he was discovered by the county’s head of talent development, Jigar Naik.

“He worked incredibly hard and thought about the game, which really stood out,” Naik told BBC Radio Leicester’s Talking Foxes podcast.

“He was thinking about his bowling, he was thinking about making videos and how he could get better and I think it was quite unusual for a boy of 16 or 17 to have thoughts like that.

“He spoke to all the coaches, the bowling coach, the batting coach, everyone, about how he could get better. His hunger to achieve that was really remarkable and still is.”

While Naik admits that Hull is still in his early stages, he is convinced that the natural qualities he brought with him from day one, combined with the desire to improve, can take him far.

“This is great for the academy because it shows that the jump from the academy to international level is quickly possible,” he said.

“The sky’s the limit, he’s tall – six feet – he’s only 20, he bowls at 85, 86 miles an hour regularly and he swings the ball back to the right-hander, so he’s got the right stuff.”
