Jontae Gilbert, four-star target for Georgia Tech 2025, makes decision on college commitment
Georgia Tech made it to the final five for four-star defensive back Jontae Gilbert in June, but Gilbert will not be playing for Brent Key in Atlanta. The 2025 four-star defensive back made his college choice today, choosing Kirby Smart and Georgia. It seemed like things were heading that way after Gilbert received several predictions that he would end up at Georgia, but today he made it official.
While Gilbert would have been a great addition to Georgia Tech’s class, Monday could mark their biggest recruiting achievement of the modern era. Five-star offensive tackle Josh Petty is set to commit that day, and Georgia Tech has received multiple predictions to land Petty from the industry’s top recruiting analysts. We’ll see what Monday brings, but it could be a big day for the Yellow Jackets.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Gilbert is a four-star prospect, the No. 141 player in the country, the No. 17 defensive back in the country and the No. 18 player in the state of Georgia.
Here’s a scouting report on Gilbert, along with some stats and information courtesy of 247Sports’ Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins:
“A promising defensive back with a longer frame and traits worth molding long-term. He was measured at just over 6’1″ several times during the summer prior to junior season and has proven to have extra length in his arms. He has played safety and cornerback early in his career and has played both positions while facing respectable competition from Atlanta. He is viewed by some coaches as more of a safety on Saturdays, but given what he’s put on tape so far, he might be best suited for an outside role in a physical snap-to-whistle coverage scheme as he’s not afraid to use his hands and squeeze vertical routes. Offers upside as a run defender as he looks to break blocks and carry balls on the ground. He produces few balls, but his frame is impressive. Top end speed is a little questionable, though, given a lack of data points. Should be viewed as a potential multi-year impact player for a Power Five program if he can continue to improve.”
“He also ran track and field in high school.
“2022: Two-way player for Douglass, serving as both a DB and WR. Totaled 54 tackles, 2 PBU and an INT. Helped the Astros reach the Georgia AAA playoffs. Earned All-Region honors.”
