Joint Base San Antonio security forces return fire on active shooters near Chapman Annex

SAN ANTONIO – A shooting near Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) – Lackland prompted security officers to return fire.

JBSA officials said the incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning at the main gate of the Chapman Training Annex.

A preliminary report from the San Antonio Police Department said that around 2:00 a.m., unknown suspects fired several shots at Air Force security personnel stationed at the gate.

The guards on duty told the police that they could hear gunshots and bullets flying past them.

Following the incident, the post was secured by increased security forces as a precautionary measure.

Shortly after 5:00 a.m., police said, a limousine stopped on Median Base Road east of the entrance gate and Air Force personnel were shot a second time.

In the presence of additional personnel, several Air Force personnel returned fire on the suspect vehicle.

The status of the suspect is currently unknown.

The main gate was closed pending an investigation into the shooting, but has since reopened.

In a press release, the JBSA stated that the shooters were probably not military personnel.

JBSA also confirmed that while the shooting outside the base prompted a response from security personnel, the shooting did not pose a threat to the base.

No soldiers or personnel were injured in the incident.
