Joey King’s new film ‘Uglies’ confirms Netflix release date

Netflix has confirmed the release of Joey King’s dystopian sci-fi film “The Uglies.”

The film is an adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 novel Uglies, with the author sharing the good news on Twitter/X. After a long development period, the film was shot in 2021 and is now set to land on our screens. 13 September.

It will be less than two months before fans of the book series can see King as protagonist Tally Youngblood.

Set in a post-apocalyptic future and retelling the events of the first book, the film follows 16-year-old Tally as she prepares for plastic surgery to transform herself from “ugly” to “pretty.”

Tally begins to question this protocol when she befriends Shay, another Ugly who shares her birthday with her. Shay has no plans to ever become a Pretty, and invites Tally to live free of constraints in a breakaway settlement called Smoke.

Meanwhile, Tally is hired by the government to help find the rebels.

McG directs The Uglies from a screenplay co-written by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor and Whit Anderson. In addition to King, who also serves as executive producer, the film also stars Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, Chase Stokes and Laverne Cox.

King recently starred alongside Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron in the Netflix film “A Family Affair.”

The romantic comedy is about young personal assistant Zara, who is horrified to discover that her boss, the cheeky movie star Chris (Efron), has started a relationship with her mother Brooke (Kidman).

“The Uglies” will be available to stream on Netflix starting September 13th.
