Joey Chestnut broke his world record in hot dog eating on Monday by defeating longtime rival Takeru Kobayashi in a showdown between the two biggest global stars of professional competitive eating that was billed as “unfinished beef.”

Chestnut devoured 83 all-beef hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, while Kobayashi ate 66 hot dogs and buns at the Netflix Labor Day event at HyperX Arena in Las Vegas.

Three years ago, Chestnut ate 76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes – a world record at the time.

“It’s incredible. I’ve been trying to do 80 hot dogs for years and I would never have done it without Kobayashi. He pushes me,” said the 16-time Nathan’s Hot Dog champion after the event.

“We weren’t always nice to each other. … We pushed each other to do our best.”

It was the first time in 15 years that the two arch enemies faced each other.

“I feel like I did everything I could,” said Japanese Kobayashi through his interpreter.

With the win, Chestnut received $100,000 in prize money, a hot dog-shaped trophy, and a championship belt designed by World Wrestling Entertainment.

According to streaming service Netflix, 2,400 hot dogs were prepared for the competition last month – 300 of which were prepared for the main event on Monday.

Chestnut, 40, was barred from participating in Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest this year because of his sponsorship deal with rival plant-based food company Impossible Foods.

In 2007, Chestnut ate 66 hot dogs and buns and dethroned six-time champion Kobayashi.

Kobayashi attempted unsuccessfully to recapture the Mustard Belt from Chestnut in 2008 and 2009, but was subsequently unable to compete in Coney Island due to a contract dispute.
