Joe Locke’s ‘Agatha All Along’ Character Identity: All the Clues

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for the first three episodes of Agatha, all the time.

Joe Locke’s mysterious gothic “teen” in Agatha all the time marks quite a change in character from his Heart Stopper Role of Charlie Spring.

The young British actor made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Agatha all the time when the series premiered with two episodes on September 18. Showrunner Jac Shaeffer has hinted at an entertaining build-up that points to the revelation of Locke’s character’s true identity.

Numerous theories on the Internet mostly point to a certain character in the Marvel comics. We’ll guide you through all the Easter eggs and clues below:

In the first two episodes, it becomes clear that Teen cannot reveal any details about his identity. When Agatha (Hahn) asks Teen his name in episode 2, he says it, but a seal that appears to be in the shape of a cursive capital “M” covers his lips as he says the word. The most common theory is that Teen is Wanda’s son Billy Kaplan, also known as Wiccan, and the “M” could stand for “Maximoff.”

His voice also sounds muffled to Agatha in the car when she asks him where he’s from. She can hear the radio just fine, but his voice goes completely silent. Also on this car ride, Teen’s friend (who could be Teddy Altman from the comics) calls him because he’s “worried.” Billy is one of the few openly gay male Marvel characters.

It’s important to note that Teen is the one who frees Agatha from the curse Wanda left on Westview, trapping the witch in her false role as nosy neighbor Agnes when she sneaked into the dream world created by Wanda. He’s an amateur witch and arrived shortly after Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal made his grand entrance, making it a little unclear what magic was coming from him or her in the interrogation room. Photos of the corpse of the woman Agnes saw in Episode 1 turned into flowers and a painting appeared on the mirrored wall.

One big connection that many viewers have noticed is a particular outfit that Locke wears in a scene in one of the trailers for Agatha all the time.

A shot of Locke in clothing very similar to the outfit worn by young William ‘Billy’ Maximoff in WandaVision. The character poster below also shows the costume.

In the comics, Billy has powers very similar to those of his mother Wanda – chaos magic, telepathy and other electrical powers that viewers learned about in the last episodes of WandaVision.

Episode 3 – “Through many miles/full of tricks and trials”

It isn’t until Episode 3 that Agatha’s chaotic coven realizes that “someone has placed a seal on the boy.” The seal, or magical sigil, is in the shape of a cursive capital letter M. Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone) points it out, and it is the first time Teen realizes that he, too, is under the spell.

Who is Mephistopheles?

Another theory is that the seal belongs to Mephisto, which could either support the theory that Teen is Billy or set the stage for Teen to be the son of the red demon. In the comics, Wanda created her twin sons from two lost souls that Mephisto “loaned” to her.

Mephisto is a master manipulator and a major villain in the comics. He returned to retrieve the boys’ souls when Wanda gave them up, but the souls were so influenced by Wanda that they defeated the demon and were reincarnated elsewhere. Billy was born the son of Jeff and Rebbecca Kaplan in New York City and later renamed himself Wiccan after taking the title Asgardian for a while. Wiccan became a Young Avenger alongside Kate Bishop and Cassie Lang.

In the third episode, Jenn (Sasheer Zamata) drops the name Mephisto when the coven visits a luxurious beach house for their first test, which turns out to be the one for them – the Potions Witch. This is not a reference to the teen’s identity, but to that of Agatha’s son, who – Jenn tells Teen – was traded by Agatha for the Book of the Damned (The Darkhold). This comes after Jenn warns Teen to beware of Agatha, as there are rumors that she traded her own child for the Darkhold, and this was mentioned in a previous episode with the words “another child sacrifice?” in reference to Teen.

In the comics, Agatha Harkness’ son Nicholas Scratch grew up to be a powerful sorcerer and became an agent of Mephisto after being banished to Hell, where he agreed to serve the red demon.

“They say no one really knows what happened to him,” Jennifer says. “They say he could be dead. Others say he could be a demon or an agent of Mephisto. But hey, that’s what happens when you have Agatha Harkness as a mother. I doubt she would even recognize her own son if he showed up on the doorstep.”

Later, as he gets closer to Alice (Ali Ahn), Teen confesses, “A lot happened to me when I was 13, too,” which could refer to some things based on who he really is.

In Episode 2, the “Black Heart” that was on the list of witches Agatha needed to form her coven led her to ask Mrs. Hart, aka Sharon Davis (Debra Jo Rupp), who came in as a missing green witch, to perform the necessary earth magic. But the clue also brought to mind Rio Vidal’s self-proclaimed “black heart” that beats for Agatha.

Interestingly, Blackheart is a character in the Marvel Comics. In fact, he is the son of Mephisto. Due to the way Rio Vidal described her own heart, some believe she may represent the gender-swapped child of Mephisto, likely connected to Teen, as she appeared in Westview around the time Teen was looking for Wanda. If Rio is Blackheart, it makes sense that she would be looking for Wanda’s son.

However, Teen himself could also be Blackheart. As lovable as he is, it is not clear if Teen has an ulterior motive when he asks for Agatha’s guidance on the witch’s path.

All signs point to Mephisto being on the way, as in the same trailer mentioned above where we see Teen in a Billy-like outfit, a suspicious fiery figure that looks very similar to the demon appears at the end.

Baron Mordo

Mordo is also worth considering because he has the status of Sorcerer Supreme in one universe, as in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). In the film, which features Wanda as a villain, Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), as the Sorcerer Supreme, imprisons Doctor Strange and America Chavez in the Illuminati headquarters in one of the many multiversal dimensions. Wanda used the Darkhold to dreamwalk into herself in that universe and killed the four Illuminati – Captain Carter (Haley Atwell), Black Bolt (Anson Mount), Captain Marvel (Lashana Lynch), Reed Richards (John Krasinski), and Professor X (Patrick Stewart) – leaving only Mordo alive.

Mordo is the least likely theory about the Wizard of the Seal, as Teen’s obscured identity will have to give way to the introduction of a character, be it his future Young Avenger self or Mephisto, or even to bring Wanda back. Mordo’s connection to Wanda from their previous encounter could motivate him to want to hide Billy and Tommy from her if she is somehow still alive and looking for them.

There is a deleted scene from Multiverse of Madness where Wanda kills Mordo, so the fact that they decided to leave that out and let him live is an interesting clue.
