Joaquin Phoenix leaves Todd Haynes’ gay romance shortly before filming begins

Joaquin Phoenix has dropped out of Todd Haynes’ planned romantic drama. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The untitled project is not moving forward after the actor dropped out just five days before filming was to begin in Guadalajara, Mexico. The role, which Phoenix originally pitched to Haynes and developed with the Oscar-nominated filmmaker, will not be recast for the film.

Haynes’ film was to focus on an intense gay romance in the 1930s and co-star Danny Ramirez, who Top Shooter: Maverick and the upcoming Captain America: Brave New WorldChristine Vachon and Pam Koffler served as producers for the Killer Films project, with MK2 Film distributing.

THR has asked the Phoenix team for comment.

Haynes was most recently responsible for last year’s Netflix title May Decemberstarring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and receiving an Oscar nomination for his screenplay. His previous films include Far from heaven, I am not there And Carolthe latter starring alongside Phoenix’s long-time partner Rooney Mara. Haynes received an Oscar nomination for his screenplay for 2002’s The Last Man. Far from heaven.

Phoenix will soon star alongside Lady Gaga in director Todd Phillips’ Joker: Foil for Two. The Warner Bros. film will be released on October 4th and is a sequel to the 2019 film jokerwhich earned Phoenix an Oscar.

The actor’s most recent works include Napoleon, Beau is afraid And Come on, come on. He will star alongside Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler in the feature film Eddington out of Beau is afraid Filmmaker Ari Aster.
