Jimmy Johnson blasts Panthers owner David Tepper after Bryce Young fiasco

After the Bryce Young fiasco, it was a busy week for the Carolina Panthers. Pretty much everyone with a microphone weighed in on what went wrong with the franchise. On Sunday, it was Jimmy Johnson’s turn before the Panthers faced the Las Vegas Raiders under new starter Andy Dalton.

The long-time head coach of the Dallas Cowboys was on Fox NFL Prelude and when he mentioned Young’s substitution, he blamed Panthers owner David Tepper. Johnson went on to list all of his sins, harshly criticizing the billionaire and accusing him of playing “fantasy football” by constantly making decisions based on his whims rather than the advice of the real football people around him.

“The owner of the Carolina Panthers, that’s the problem. He makes the big decisions without listening to his football people. David Tepper. It’s his team, he can do whatever he wants. But look at the people left. He’s the one who wanted Bryce Young as No. 1. Look at Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore, Brian Burns. Look at Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold. Look at the coaches, Steve Wilk, Frank Reich, Matt Rhule. He chased them all away!

“He needs to listen to his football people and stop playing fantasy football.”

Tepper bought the Panthers in 2018. Since then, Carolina has a 33-70 record, including the two losses earlier this season. They have not appeared in the playoffs since 2017. The owner has shuffled around six head coaches and numerous quarterbacks. The stats don’t lie on that front – the Panthers have been terrible during Tepper’s tenure.

Maybe this latest debacle will bring about change. Maybe not. Either way, the 2024 season looks tough again for Carolina.
