Jets vs. 49ers: First responders who helped Ricky Pearsall after a shooting honored before season opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) — Two of the first responders who helped San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall after he was shot during an attempted robbery were honored before the team’s season-opening game Monday night at Levi’s Stadium.

SFPD Sergeant Joelle Harrell was the first officer to arrive and assist Pearsall after he was shot near Union Square. Her husband and fellow officer Frank Harrell accompanied her to Thursday’s game against the New York Jets.

San Francisco General Hospital surgeon Dr. Luck Kornblith was one of the surgeons who treated Pearsall at the hospital and was also honored at the game.

Pearsall presented each of them with a signed jersey during a grateful reunion on the field.

As the Niners opened their official work week ahead of Monday night’s showdown against the New York Jets, Pearsall strolled onto the field minutes into Thursday’s session. Wearing a dark 49ers T-shirt, gray sweatpants and soccer cleats, Pearsall tossed a football to himself as he watched his teammates go through their individual drills.

It was Pearsall’s first public appearance since he was shot by a 17-year-old male suspect while shopping for luggage near Union Square in San Francisco.

About an hour before Pearsall’s appearance on the training field, coach Kyle Shanahan reported on an emotional Saturday.

“It was really tough,” Shanahan said. “All we knew was that he was shot. That’s all we knew. And then it took us about an hour to figure out where the hospital was and stuff like that, because we only called a couple people that we knew. But none of us knew where he was or anything.”

About 40 minutes after the first call, Shanahan received another call saying Pearsall was conscious, able to talk, and would survive. However, this was fully confirmed when Pearsall called Shanahan on FaceTime.

“That was the first time I knew he was OK,” Shanahan said. “It was really unbelievable. Because when you hear about a shooting in that hour, you don’t know where it happened or anything, so you just assume the worst. And then to hear that it was shot in the chest, you think that usually doesn’t go so well. And then to actually talk to him 15 minutes later, and just talk to a guy who seems like he’s OK.”

The 17-year-old suspect is due to appear before juvenile court on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. He is accused of attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and attempted second-degree robbery.

The San Francisco District Attorney told us it will take at least two weeks before she decides whether to seek to charge him as an adult.

As for Pearsall, he is expected to make a full recovery but will miss at least four games as the 49ers give him time to recover.
