Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals of the US Open, aims for first major semifinal

Jessica Pegula has reached her seventh Grand Slam quarterfinal. She hopes to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal.

Pegula, the sixth-seeded American, swept 18th-seeded Russian Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-2 in the fourth round of the US Open on Monday. She has not lost a set in four matches.

Pegula will face No. 1 Iga Swiatek or No. 16 Liudmila Samsonova on Wednesday for a spot in the last four and will become the oldest American to make her Grand Slam singles semifinal debut.

If Pegula fails to win this next match, she will set the record for most Grand Slam quarterfinals without a semifinal appearance in the professional era. according to ESPN.

US OPEN draws: Women | Men | Playing order

Retired Kaia Kanepi, Carla Suarez Navarro and Katerina Maleeva all had 0-7 records in Grand Slam quarterfinals. Manuela Maleeva lost her first 11 Grand Slam quarterfinals before reaching her first semifinal at the 1992 US Open.

The 30-year-old Pegula lost to Swiatek in the quarterfinals of the French Open and the US Open in 2022 and reached her highest ranking to date this year with third place in the world rankings.

It is already clear that Pegula will again be the top-ranked American after the US Open and will overtake Coco Gauff.

“I feel like the pressure was more this year because I came into this tournament so well,” said Pegula, who won a title and finished second in two tournaments in August. “I just need to win the match to get to the semifinals and then everything will be settled, right?”
