Jerry Jones fires back against Baltimore Ravens RB Derrick Henry

Derrick Henry looks great in the purple and black of the Baltimore Ravens, but there was a real chance he could have worn other colors this season.

The Dallas Cowboys were frequently suggested as a destination for Henry as a free agent, not only because they desperately needed a running back, but because he now lives in the area during the offseason. However, the Cowboys never called him and he instead took his talents to Baltimore.

After Henry completely overran the Dallas defense on Sunday, rushing for 151 yards and two touchdowns in Baltimore’s win, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was again asked about his pursuit of the star running back, to which he gave a very blunt answer.

“We couldn’t afford Derrick Henry,” Jones said, according to Pro Football Talk. “I don’t know. Why can’t you buy a mansion if you live in a different type of house? We couldn’t afford it. We can’t juggle it all. It’s as simple as that.”

Henry said after the game that he had no particular motivation for this game, but he absolutely played like his best performance as a Raven. If that’s the future expectations, then the Ravens are more than capable of overcoming their slow start to the season.

“I set high standards for myself,” Henry said. “I definitely wanted to come here and make an impact with the way I play that gives us a chance to win. I feel like I got going a little slow the first two weeks. But like I said, we’re all connected and we all just want to come here, perform and win — and we did that today. Being in Dallas — this is the offseason (for me) and this is where I spend most of the offseason. It definitely felt a little good today.”
