Jerod Mayo relies twice on Jacoby Brissett’s “Grit” as Patriots starter

The 1-2 New England Patriots are not planning on making a quarterback change in the near future.

Team captain Jacoby Brissett will remain the starter under center until his head coach announces otherwise.

“Jacoby is our quarterback until I say he’s not the quarterback,” Jerod Mayo told reporters during his video conference on Friday. “I thought he showed a lot of toughness and grit last night. You know, on breakdowns on defense, he tried to do what we asked him to do. But I would say we just have to get better as a team, as a coaching staff.”

In the 24-3 loss to the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, Brissett completed 12 of 18 passes for 98 yards, with no touchdowns or turnovers. One long pass of 22 came out of the game after halftime. But there was more to the story than just the lack of deep throws. There was a lack of a pocket to stand in and make passes facing deep.

The 31-year-old quarterback was sacked five times behind an offensive line that started with rookie Caedan Wallace at left tackle, 53-man promotion Michael Jordan at left guard, captain David Andrews at center, rookie Layden Robinson at right guard and converted interior blocker Mike Onwenu at right tackle.

“I think we can fix the problems internally,” Mayo said of New England’s pass defense. “It comes down to details, and we didn’t pay attention to details as a unit. And that’s the offensive line. It’s not just one person – it’s a unit. You have to be able to see the picture through the same lens, and we just didn’t do that last night. But I think it’s correctable.”

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Brissett was blitzed on 40% of his dropbacks, while Pro Football Focus noticed the home defense, which created a dozen quarterback pressure situations against the 91st pick in the 2016 draft.

This made the evaluation more difficult.

Left tackle Vederian Lowe was sidelined with a knee injury before the AFC East opener. Left guard Sidy Sow also did not participate in the road trip due to a preseason ankle injury. And Cole Strange, who has started all 27 games since arriving in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, remains on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from a torn patellar tendon.

“We had some young guys out there,” Mayo added. “They showed some different looks that maybe caused some confusion, but the overall communication needs to get better. I still trust those guys to do their job. We just have to be very intentional about the game and adapt in the game.”

Backup quarterback Drake Maye made his NFL debut with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter at the Meadowlands. The No. 3 pick from North Carolina completed 4 of 8 passes for 22 yards.

He fought twice and was sacked twice, including once at the goal line as time expired. It was the seventh sack of the night for a Jets defense that started the season with as many.

“He’s athletic. He can make all the throws,” Mayo said of the 22-year-old Maye. “Coming off the bench at this point is always tough, no matter what position, but especially at the quarterback position. I thought he did well and tried to put a drive together. That’s something to build on. I thought it would be a good opportunity for him to go out there and do some live drills.”

But in Foxborough there are currently no plans to change the 70:30 split of the first team’s training sessions.

“Right now, I’d say it’s still the status quo,” Mayo said. “And I’ve said it before – Jacoby is still our starting quarterback and we just have to be ready to support him. There are 11 guys out there on offense, so everyone’s needed.”

The defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers will host next week’s kickoff on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET at Levi’s Stadium.
