Jennifer Lopez had previously caused a stir in Miami after she and Ben Affleck decided at the last minute to postpone their wedding in 2003.

Although the couple separated in January 2004—the romance rekindled 17 years later and then recently split again—they announced in a statement in September 2003 that they were postponing their wedding, four days before the scheduled date.

“Due to the excessive media attention surrounding our wedding, we have decided to postpone the date,” Affleck and Lopez said in the statement at the time, adding, among other things, “We felt that a day that should have been joyful and sacred could be tainted for us, our families and our friends.”

During the postponement announcement, Lopez was spotted in Miami Beach, splashing in the waves in a tiny white lace-up bikini. Later that evening, she went to see a movie. Once upon a time in Mexicoand clubbing at places like Crobar and Opium Garden/Prive.

Meanwhile, Affleck was spotted dining at Baja Fresh restaurant in the Los Angeles area at the time.

The actress and singer has not been spotted out and about since news that she had filed for divorce from Affleck made headlines on Tuesday, August 20. This was their first marriage to each other, following their initial engagement that ended in 2004 and their 2021 reunion that eventually led to their wedding in 2022.

Affleck left a Los Angeles office building on Tuesday without his wedding ring. The Oscar winner was photographed walking through the building’s parking lot wearing a gray T-shirt, jeans and black-tinted sunglasses.

He was spotted in the same office building on several other occasions in recent weeks as he spent the summer apart from Lopez, amid reports of marital tensions between the two.

Multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Lopez filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, the second anniversary of the couple’s wedding celebration in Georgia. Atlas Star filed for divorce without a lawyer and set the separation date as April 26, 2024.

A source told PEOPLE on Tuesday that Lopez’s decision to divorce Affleck left her “disappointed and sad,” although she feels it’s “time to move on.”

“Ben has given her no indication that he wants to continue their marriage,” the latter insider said. “He has shown no commitment or interest in making their marriage work.”

The source added: “It’s gotten to the point where she just has to take care of herself.”
