Jennifer Lopez may have to take inspiration from Elizabeth Taylor’s script for her upcoming film with Ben Affleck

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s marriage may be over, but the duo’s professional relationship is far from over.

The former couple, who previously appeared together in “Gigli” (2003) and “Jersey Girl” (2004) – both of whom worked on an American biographical sports drama called “Unstoppable,” which wrapped filming earlier this year and is scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, according to the TIFF’s official website.

The film, which tells the story of Anthony Robles, a wrestler born with one leg, was produced by Affleck’s company Artists Equity, which he founded with Matt Damon. Lopez plays Robles’ mother. Although both stars are involved in the film, sources recently told People magazine that only Lopez will appear at the premiere.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck divorce after two years of marriage

Regardless of whether they both show up for the premiere, Steve Honig, founder of public relations and issue management firm The Honig Company, says the former couple have an “obligation to move beyond” the personal drama surrounding their impending divorce – a concept all too familiar from the late Elizabeth Taylor.

“The question they have to ask themselves in every decision is simply what is best for the film,” Honig told Fox News Digital. “Hundreds of people are involved in the making of a film and they have an obligation to promote it appropriately. However, the media must respect that they are there to promote the film and not try to get personal information.”

“This is a golden opportunity for both of them to show how they can rise above gossip and sensational headlines and be the true professionals they are. If Liz Taylor and Richard Burton could coexist professionally, so can Ben and Jennifer.”

Taylor and Burton fell in love and later married while working on the 1965 classic film Cleopatra. The two were both married to their respective spouses at the time.

Since Lopez filed for divorce on Tuesday, the timing was not intentional but “not a coincidence,” says PR expert Doug Eldridge (founder of Achilles PR).

“We’re seeing a trend in Hollywood where controversy — sometimes authentic, sometimes manufactured — crops up right before a movie premiere,” Eldridge told Fox News Digital. “Something similar is happening with Blake Lively’s film. Ironically, there never seem to be any potential blockbusters, only smaller-budget films or those released outside of the summer season.”

“The goal is clear, even if it’s a bit trite: generate excitement and buzz to generate interest in a film that would otherwise only generate mediocre ticket sales,” he continued. “You used to see a ‘leaked’ romance between the stars on set (which almost always ended at the end of the media tour), but that’s been replaced by tension, ridicule and now divorce.”

“When it comes to Lopez and Affleck, it’s getting harder and harder to discern the details and driving reasons behind the divorce, but if anyone knows how to use a story to generate attention and interest, it’s Lopez,” he continued. “It may not have been intentional, but it’s probably not a coincidence or accident, either.”

Representatives for Lopez and Affleck did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

The exes also worked together on another film this year, “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” an adaptation of the 1985 Broadway musical. According to Variety, the film began shooting in April, around the same time Lopez claimed the couple had secretly split, and production wrapped in June.

During an appearance on “Live with Kelly and Mark” in May, Lopez told co-hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos that she was “in top shape” after filming.

In May, a month after the duo secretly split, Lopez spoke about the role, telling Kelly Ripa, “I just finished a movie called ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman.’,’ where it was all about singing and dancing, which was both exciting and exhausting. Now I’m ready to go. I’m thinner than I’ve ever been. I’m in top shape right now.”

In March 2023, Affleck said CBS Sunday Mornings about working with his soon-to-be ex-wife on “Unstoppable.”

“What fun, what joy to do something with her, to see how great she is, to go to work with your wife, to go to work with your best friend,” he said. “If you don’t like the people you work with and if you’re having difficulties or problems at work, I think that’s one of the things that can really cause depression, anxiety and pain in people. And conversely, if you love the people at work, you probably have a pretty good life, you know?”

When asked by Variety earlier this year if she and Affleck would ever work together again, Lopez said, “Maybe, on the right thing.”

“I mean, we love working together and being together, so maybe,” she added.

Lopez filed for divorce Affleck appeared in Los Angeles District Court on Tuesday, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their separation, according to documents obtained by Fox News Digital.

The “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” singer gave April 26 as the date of their separation. Lopez also stated that she does not want to award spousal support to herself or Affleck, according to court documents.

Lopez filed the divorce papers on the second anniversary of their wedding ceremony in Georgia.

Affleck and Lopez were engaged in 2002 after meeting on the set of their film Gigli. Affleck proposed to her and the two planned to marry in 2004, but the wedding was called off at the last minute.

Twenty years later, Lopez and Affleck married in Las Vegas during a surprise wedding ceremony.

While rumors of their split began swirling earlier this year after they weren’t seen together for 47 days, rumors about the state of Affleck and Lopez’s marriage took a drastic turn when Affleck didn’t attend Lopez’s lavish “Bridgerton”-style 55th wedding. Birthday party on July 2nd.

Earlier this year, the documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” showed Affleck reluctantly dealing with the public criticism that followed the couple when they got together in the early 2000s.

The documentary follows Lopez not only as she works on her new album “This is Me…Now,” but also on the high-concept music film “This is Me…Now: A Love Story.”

“Jen was really inspired by that experience because that’s how artists work,” Affleck said. “They’re inspired by their private lives, and that moves you. I know that as a writer and director, I certainly do the same things. But things that are private, I’ve always felt sacred and special because they’re private. So that was kind of an adjustment for me.”

In the documentary, they admitted that they “crashed under the pressure” of being a tabloid phenomenon and that it put a strain on their relationship, leading them to call off their 2003 wedding three days before it was scheduled.

BEN AFFLECK ADMITS THAT ROMANCE WITH JENNIFER LOPEZ FORCED HIM TO MAKE MAJOR COMPROMISES: “A RELATIVE PARTICIPANT”

“I had a clear sense of boundaries with the press initially, and I don’t think Jen had the same objections that I did. I had major objections,” Affleck said.

“When we got back together, I said, ‘Listen, a social media relationship is one of the things I don’t want.’ And then I realized that’s not a fair demand. It’s like marrying a boat captain, you want to like the water. We’re just two people with different approaches trying to compromise.”

Jane Fonda, who has worked with Lopez in the past, even weighed in on the publicity of their relationship, claiming Lopez was “trying to prove something.”

“I want you to know that I don’t know exactly why, but I feel a connection to you and Ben and I really want this to work,” Fonda said. “But that’s my concern. It feels too much like you’re trying to prove something instead of just living it. You know, every other photo is just the two of you kissing and hugging.”

The “Hustlers” star laughed and played it down, saying, “That’s just how we live our lives.”
