Jennifer Lopez has officially ended her marriage to Ben Affleck on a significant date: the second anniversary of their wedding in the South.

“She was tired of waiting and the date she did it speaks volumes,” a source says of Lopez, 55, who filed for divorce without a lawyer on Tuesday, August 20.

The move “gives her control over the process,” the source adds. “It’s good that she did it.”

Another Lopez insider echoed this sentiment, stressing that the superstar is ready to move on. “She’s really tried to make everything work and is heartbroken,” the insider says. “The kids are the top priority, as they always have been.”

The singer is mother to 16-year-old twins Max and Emme (with ex-husband Marc Anthony) and Affleck has three children, Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12, with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

In her divorce filing, Lopez listed the couple’s separation date as April 26, 2024. She and Affleck, 52, married in July 2022 during a surprise wedding at A Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, just months after their engagement in April 2022.

“We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years of patient,” Lopez wrote to her fans in her newsletter On the JLo on July 17, 2022, referring to their first breakup in 2004.

A month after the Las Vegas wedding, they held a larger wedding ceremony in Georgia on the 87-acre grounds of Affleck’s estate outside Savannah in August 2022. It was a star-studded affair attended by Affleck’s friends Matt Damon and Kevin Smith, among others.

Sharing photos with her fans, also via her newsletter, Lopez wrote about the rekindling of her relationship with Affleck: “On this day, some old wounds were healed and the burden of the past was finally lifted from our shoulders. We have come full circle – and not at all as we had planned. Better.”

PEOPLE first reported in May that Affleck and Lopez were separated. In the months that followed, the two were rarely seen together and were photographed with and without wedding rings.
