The “Bennifer” love story that blossomed more than two decades ago is over.

On Tuesday, Jennifer Lopez, 54, filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, 51, in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY. Tuesday marked the two-year anniversary of the estranged couple’s wedding in Georgia.

TMZ and Variety report April 26 as the date of the split. TMZ was the first to report the news.

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Affleck and Lopez for comment.

It was Affleck’s second marriage and Lopez’s fourth. The two were engaged twice: first in 2002 and then again in 2021.

Lopez’s filing for divorce came after several months of speculation among fans and media after she and Affleck began appearing alone in public.

Affleck was absent from the Met Gala on May 6 in New York City as Lopez attended her duties as one of the event’s co-chairs. The night before, Affleck attended Netflix’s “The Greatest Roast of All Time: The Roast of Tom Brady” in Los Angeles, and Lopez did not appear to be in attendance.

The separate appearances came while Lopez was reportedly filming “Kiss of the Spider Woman” in New Jersey and Affleck was filming “The Accountant 2” in Los Angeles.

On May 16, Lopez and Affleck were photographed together for the first time in over a month, both wearing their wedding rings. They have been spotted together a few times since then, although they are reportedly no longer living together.

The two hit it off after meeting on the set of the 2002 romantic comedy “Gigli,” when Lopez was married to her second husband, Cris Judd.

After Lopez and Affleck called off their engagement in January 2004, blaming too much media attention, the “This Is Me… Now” singer married Marc Anthony later that year. The couple had twins Max and Emme in 2008. They divorced in 2014. Affleck married fellow actress Jennifer Garner in 2005 and had three children together: Violet, Fin and Samuel. The two divorced in 2018.

In March 2019, Lopez became engaged to MLB star Alex Rodriguez, but they officially split in April 2021.

When Affleck and Lopez were spotted together several times following JLo and A-Rod’s split, the rumor mill was abuzz with speculation about a “Bennifer” comeback. Lopez put an end to the rumors in July 2021 when she went official with Affleck on Instagram for her 52nd birthday.

The couple began appearing together at major events and showing their love for each other at venues like the Venice Film Festival and the 2021 Met Gala.

In April 2022, Lopez announced that she and Affleck were engaged again, this time with a rare green diamond ring. (Affleck had proposed to her two decades earlier with a now-famous pink diamond engagement ring.)

A few months later, Lopez revealed a surprise for her fans in her fan newsletter “On the JLo”: She and her fiancé were married in a nighttime ceremony in Las Vegas on July 16, 2022 – and it was “the best possible wedding we could have imagined.”

“We did it,” she wrote. “Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And as it turns out, love is patient. Twenty years of patience.”

A month later, they remarried in a more formal wedding ceremony at Affleck’s estate outside Savannah, Georgia.

At the beginning of 2024, speculation arose as to whether there was a conflict between the two, as they continued to appear in public without the other.
