Jefferson County 911 uses new AI technology for faster emergency response

GOLDEN, Colorado – Jefferson County 911 is using new artificial intelligence technology to enable faster, more efficient emergency response in Jefferson and Clear Creek counties.

At the emergency call center, every operation begins the same way.

“This is Jeffcom 911. Can you hear me?” said caller Juanita Williams.

But after that, Williams has no idea what will come next.

“We are here to be the calm voice in the storm of people’s lives,” Williams said.

Previously, she took notes throughout the call, but now she is assisted by a new AI.

“This is the first time in Colorado that we are introducing our expanded capabilities here, the first time in the entire state,” said Chris Hill, CEO of Carbyne.

Carbyne is the new AI technology designed to support call takers.

Hill said every conversation is recorded in writing, allowing details to be captured more quickly than before.

The platform can also automatically recognize different languages, so the waiting time for interpreters is shorter.

“We use AI to understand the different tone of voice of callers, whether they are screaming or yelling,” Hill said.

Within the next two months, JeffCom911 will also be able to program this new system to handle repeat calls and move real emergencies to the front of the queue.

“We can have an AI bot take the call and say, ‘Are you calling about the accident on I-70?’ They say, ‘Yeah, I just wanted to let you know.’ We say, ‘Thank you. Do you need any more help?’ They say, ‘No.’ We say, ‘Thank you.’ Or the bot does it, and the call gets handled and never has to be transferred to dispatch,” Hill explained.

And while he says this is in no way a replacement for answering calls, Williams is already seeing a difference in the short time the solution has been in use.

“We’re finding that information is being generated twice as fast. I think it would be helpful if other emergency response centers had this system,” Williams said.
