JD Vance’s “Childless Cat Ladies” remark was a reliable punchline at the 2024 Emmys

Just 50 days before the next presidential election, politics was the focus for many stars. Emmy 2024—where the vote was a topic of many speeches and JD Vance was a common punchline.

The first reference to the 2024 presidential election came early in the evening. At the presentation of the first award of the evening Selena Gomez referred to them Only murders Co-Stars Steve Martin And Martin Short as “childless cat ladies,” in reference to Vance’s now infamous soundbite.

Two of the evening’s first winners also made political statements in their acceptance speeches. Before she presented the lead role in a comedy series Hacking‘S Jean Smart, Candice Bergen reflects on the then Vice President Daniel QuayleCriticism of her cult sitcom Murphy, Brown. “For 11 years I had the great privilege of playing the lead role in a comedy series called Murphy, Brown. “I was surrounded by brilliant and funny actors. “Today, a Republican vice presidential candidate would never attack a woman for having a child. My work here is done,” Bergen joked, adding a “meow” when an amused-looking Jon Stewart laughed the audience.

In honor of the show’s 25th anniversary, performers from The west wing, including Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Dulé Hill, Richard Schiffer, And Janel Moloney, also reunited to present the best drama series Shogun at the 2024 Emmys. Before announcing the winner, they aptly joked that modern political storylines would have been deemed too far-fetched for their series and implored viewers to register to vote.
