TOKYO, Aug. 11 (Jiji Press) — Japan’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday protested South Korea’s marine survey near the Takeshima Islands in the Sea of Japan, which are claimed by Japan but controlled by South Korea.

According to the ministry, a South Korean survey ship was observed that day apparently dropping cables in waters within Japan’s exclusive economic zone southwest of the islets.

Hiroyuki Namazu, director general of the ministry’s Asian and Oceania Affairs Office, protested by phone to a senior official at the South Korean embassy in Tokyo the same day, saying the poll was unacceptable and must be stopped immediately.

It was the fourth time this year that Japan protested against a South Korean marine survey near Takeshima.

According to the Japanese ministry, there was no prior announcement of the latest investigation from the South Korean side.
