Jansen leaves the Red Sox before the final series: “He went home”

Kenley Jansen’s season with the Boston Red Sox ended a few days earlier than expected.

The right-hander returned home before the end of the Red Sox season, with the organization replacing his locker and nameplate at Fenway Park before their series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

“He went home,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.

“I spoke to him this week. As soon as it was over, two days ago, he didn’t want to pitch anymore. We talked about other things, other things going on with him.”

The impending free agent was placed on the injured list on September 23 due to right shoulder inflammation, abruptly ending his second season with Boston.

Jansen recently expressed his disappointment with how his tenure with the Red Sox went and stated that he wants to join a winner this offseason.

“I don’t know what to say,” Jansen said on Sept. 14, before the Red Sox were eliminated from postseason contention, according to Cotillo.

“For me, I’m someone who always wanted to make the playoffs. Where I come from, it was always about titles. We didn’t make it last year. This year we are still there, but for me it is disappointing. That’s what I am. You want to get to the playoffs and play for a championship.”

Jansen spent two seasons with the Red Sox, saving 56 games with a 3.44 ERA and 10.3 K/9 in 105 games.

The 36-year-old previously spent 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and one season with the Atlanta Braves. He reached the playoffs in ten of those seasons.
