Janet Jackson talked about her family tree – and about the fact that in addition to her famous nuclear family, she is related to three other celebrities.
“(Stevie Wonder is) our cousin,” Janet, 58, told the presenter Scott Mills at the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show on Tuesday, August 13. “Not many people know this. He is our cousin on our mother’s side. Tracy Chapman. This is also Samuel Jackson.”
Janet was the youngest child of Katherine Jackson and the late Joe JacksonThe couple also had daughters Maureen74 and La Toya68, and sons Sigmund73, Torino (Italy)70, Jermaine69, Marlon67, Cool, 62, and the deceased Michael Jacksonn. (Katherine, 94, and Joe also had their son Brandon in 1957, but he died 24 hours after birth.)
Janet already spoke about her family life in the documentary Janet Jacksonn, released on Lifetime in January 2022. The “That’s The Way Love Goes” singer noted that she was closest to her brothers Michael and Randy during her childhood, but things changed around the time Michael debuted thriller in 1982.
“That was the first time in my life that I felt like there was something different between the two of us. That something was changing,” she explained in the documentary. “He would come into my bedroom without either of us saying a word to each other. And then he would get up and leave. That was the time when Mike and I started to go our separate ways, we weren’t as close anymore. And maybe it was just because he was so massive, so huge.”
Michael died of a drug overdose in 2009 at the age of 50, which was a great shock for Janet.
“At first it just didn’t seem true, it didn’t seem real,” she said in the 2022 documentary. “I couldn’t believe it. It took me a while to accept it. It makes you think about life.”
Although Michael and Janet’s relationship changed after his fame, Janet still remembers her brother fondly – particularly the duo’s 1995 recording of the song “Scream,” which she continues to play at her concerts in honor of her late brother.
“Mike and I wrote this song in New York, in his apartment,” she recalled BBC in July. “So (I’m) reliving that whole journey, listening to him sing it (and remembering) what he went through back then. And I’m just his little sister, always by his side and that support system. That’s always been my role.”
The song, which won a Grammy for Best Short Music Video in 1996, deals with Michael’s struggle with fame and public harassment because of his life.
“I’m sick of the injustice, I’m sick of the intrigue / Your lies are disgusting / So what the fuck does that mean?” says Michael in the song.
