Jandreski’s goal leads women’s soccer to tie at UC Irvine

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women’s soccer program (0-2-1, 0-0 WCC) picked up its first points of the regular season, fighting to a 1-1 tie with UC Irvine (1-1-1, 0-0 Big West) on Thursday night at Anteater Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a few quiet first minutes Olivia Jandreski helped the toreros to gain early momentum.
  • Jandreski scored the first shot of the game in the eighth minute, but her next shot would be even more powerful.
  • UC Irvine lost the ball in their own half and Maquena O’Callaghan jumped on the loose ball before passing it to Jandreski.
  • The junior scored the first goal of her college career in the 12th minute, firing a low ball past the outstretched arms of the Anteaters goalkeeper and into the net, making it 1-0 for the Toreros.
  • However, the Anteaters did not let themselves be discouraged and delivered nine unanswered shots at the end of the half.
  • One of them, from Laila El Behery, hit the net and equalized the game at 1-1.
  • Despite it, Ilise Medrano stayed focused in goal and made four saves in the first half.
  • In the second half, both sides were strong defensively, but the Anteaters continued to maintain the shooting advantage.
  • Under the direction of My Haugland Sørsdahl And Jenn Hashimotowho each played 90 minutes in defense, limited the Toreros UC Irvine to just three shots on goal in the second half.
  • Jandreski and Lexi Zandonella-Arasa In the last ten minutes, both teams scored and pushed for the winning goal, but the Anteaters held on and ended the tie.

  • Jandreski scored the first points of her college career in the draw, while O’Callaghan added her first point as a torero.
  • Clara Geuzaine made her college debut in the draw and played a total of 24 minutes.
  • Medrano finished the tie with six saves, the best of his career.
