James Shea: Luton Town substitute goalkeeper praises defence

“I didn’t have much to do. I thought we kept our formation excellently and defended really well as a group. The back four – at times back five – was incredible.”

Shea has also previously appeared as a substitute, making his Premier League debut in the 76th minute against Fulham in May, a match that ended in a 4-2 defeat and sealed Luton’s relegation.

Kaminski now faces a suspension and is expected to start Saturday’s away game against Preston North End for the first time since a 0-0 home draw with Hull City in May 2023 – but he is taking nothing for granted.

“I will not tell the coach who to put in the team. Hopefully I can play next week, but we will wait and see,” he said.

Kaminski was sent off for a foul – but in both of Luton’s games this season a goalkeeper has been booked for time-wasting after Burnley’s James Trafford was shown the yellow card in the season opener.

“They didn’t waste any time at all,” said Shea, who suffered a serious knee injury in 2022. “They just took their time and stayed calm.”

Head coach Rob Edwards took forward Carlton Morris, the Hatters captain, off the field to allow Shea to enter the field after the sending off.

Regarding Kaminski’s first warning, Edwards said: “I don’t know the full verdict, but it’s crazy.

“I’m the one who tells them (the goalkeepers) in training to just wait and see, because we want to try to build up and gauge what pass to play. If we can find a substitute, we can break the line and try to speed up the game that way, and not just go big on all the bodies.”

He added: “It’s my fault, but we don’t want to waste time.

“That was the first time and he tried to do the right thing. He saw it in the moment, came out to try and sweep it away and the referee called it a foul, gave a booking and he was off.

“I’m not complaining about that, but I am complaining about the first one.”
