He didn’t ruin their first meeting.
In Wednesday’s episode of “Watch What Happens Live,” 45-year-old James McAvoy revealed an embarrassing incident from his youth when he met his great love Jennifer Aniston.
The Scottish actor, who was promoting his new thriller “Speak No Evil” (now in cinemas), told how he met the “Friends” star at a Hollywood party early in his career.
“I met her and it wasn’t great,” McAvoy told host Andy Cohen.
“Not because she isn’t great,” he added.
The “X-Men: First Class” star explained: “I was at a party when I was really young, I was about 22 in LA, and I met Lucy Liu. And Lucy Liu was really, really nice to me and she said, ‘Come meet my friends.'”
He recalled how the Charlie’s Angels star introduced McAvoy to a group of people that included Aniston.
“I parked right next to Jennifer Aniston,” McAvoy said. “And just as (Liu) said, ‘Hey, guys, this is my new boyfriend James,’ instead of saying that, she was pulled aside by a guy she went to high school with. She walked away and I was just left standing there with all these people saying, ‘Hey, what’s up, I’m new in town.'”
McAvoy said he then turned to Aniston and said, “So you’re Jennifer Aniston and you’re on ‘Friends.'”
The “Atonement” star admitted: “It was hard. But she was wonderful.”
McAvoy is not alone. Her “Friends” colleague David Schwimmer has also admitted to once having a crush on Aniston, as has her late co-star Matthew Perry.
“I had a huge crush on Jen in the first season,” Schwimmer revealed during the “Friends: The Reunion” special on Max in May 2021.
“At one point we both had a huge crush on each other – but it was like two ships passing each other (in the night) because one of us was always in a relationship.”
In his 2022 memoir, published a year before his death at age 54 in October 2023, Perry wrote: “I was immediately taken with her (how could I not be?) and liked her. And I had a feeling she was intrigued too – maybe it would become something.”
He remembered asking her out on a date and getting rejected, even before Friends.
Then, after filming, the crush continued.
“Pretty early on in the filming of Friends, I realized I still had a huge crush on Jennifer Aniston,” he wrote.
“Our greetings and goodbyes became awkward. And then I asked myself, ‘How long can I look at her? Is three seconds too long?'”
Perry continued, “But how can you not have a crush on Jennifer Aniston, you know? But at some point I just said, ‘Okay, that’s enough.'”
