Jacoby Brissett remains Patriots’ starting quarterback, says coach

New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett will remain in the starting lineup despite throwing for just 98 yards and five sacks in Thursday night’s 24-3 loss to the New York Jets, head coach Jerod Mayo said Friday.

“Jacoby is our quarterback until I say he’s not the quarterback anymore,” Mayo said.

The experienced Brissett was substituted for rookie Drake Maye late in the final quarter on Thursday as the away game was tied. It was Maye’s NFL debut, who was selected by the Patriots as the third player in the NFL draft in April.

Playing behind a makeshift offensive line, Brissett was under pressure throughout the game, completing 12 of 18 passes and losing 46 yards to sacks.

Maye completed 4 of 8 passes for 22 yards and recorded two sacks for 13 yards.

The Patriots (1-2) have a nine-day break before playing the 49ers in San Francisco. They then return home to play AFC East rival Miami Dolphins and the Houston Texans, followed by a neutral-site game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London and then again against the Jets, this time in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
