Jack Draper vomits after US Open defeat: “I would never give up”

Jack Draper never thought about giving up when he lost in the semifinals to number one seed Jannik Sinner on Friday, the Briton said after a grueling match in which he vomited three times.

The 25th seed had not dropped a set before Friday in New York, but his dream run to the first semifinal of a major championship quickly turned into a nightmare as heat, humidity and nerves made him uncomfortable in the second set.

The 22-year-old said it only got worse from there, as he became dizzy from not being able to drink much fluids. He lost 7-5 7-6(3) 6-2.

“I’m not going to give up in the semifinals of a Grand Slam. I know the last set, you know, from the sidelines or on TV, it probably didn’t look like it went particularly well,” he said.

“I fought hard. You know, I’m proud of myself. I tried to fight as hard as I could. I’m just not going to be able to fight someone like him.”

Draper was able to take a lot of positives from his tenth major main draw: he was the first Briton to reach the semi-finals of the US Open since Andy Murray won the tournament twelve years ago.

Draper finished 123rd last year when he made an inspired run to the fourth round despite an injury-plagued season, and he believes he will produce results with more experience.

“I just have to keep learning, keep growing and keep experiencing situations like today where I can’t move forward,” he said.

“It’s about experience, about doing everything right, about training consistently. Over time, you simply make progress, get stronger and better.”
