Ivey visits Brookwood Career Tech Annex as part of a back-to-school tour

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey was in Tuscaloosa County on Tuesday, visiting Brookwood as part of her statewide back-to-school tour.

The governor visited the Brookwood Career Tech Annex and toured several classrooms, all designed to prepare students for careers. She also visited the preschool classrooms to recognize the system’s youngest students.

“It’s an honor to have the governor of our great state in my building,” said Kellie Hubbard, principal of Brookwood High School. “It’s just a great opportunity, not only for our school, but for our community and our students.”

Ivey’s back-to-school tour is designed to celebrate our state’s diverse educational institutions, including public schools, turnaround schools, private schools and charter schools.

“These young people are, after all, our future,” Ivey said. “So it’s incredibly important to give them attention and teach them skills so they can earn a living.”

The governor’s Turnaround Schools initiative, launched in fall 2022, is designed to transform low-performing schools and the communities around them. The governor’s office said several schools have already made significant improvements in academic achievement and school culture through this program.
