It is Trump, not Tim Walz, who cannot be trusted

Tim Walz did not lie about his service

I am responding to Melvin Deere’s letter of August 13, “Can Tim Walz really be trusted?” Tim Walz served 24 years in the National Guard, was a command sergeant major, and, since he had not yet completed his work, was entitled to the pay grade of master sergeant upon retirement.

I know an active Navy petty officer who is in the same situation.

In 1972, I served as Officer in Charge of an Engineer Team, SAC, Loring AFB, Maine. I occasionally carried an M-16, a weapon of war in war. And there was war. In my case, Vietnam; in Governor Walz’s case, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Neither the Governor nor I were deployed to an active combat zone, as is true for most military personnel. However, Walz and I supported the mission and were willing to be deployed into active combat.

Can we trust Walz to do the same? Donald Trump advocated peace, prosperity and security.

Walz served honorably in the military, in Congress, and as governor of Minnesota. So, yes, Mr. Deere, Walz has meticulously documented his service and will bring the same honesty to his office as Vice President.

However, I cannot trust Donald Trump. As the Washington Post reported, he has made 30,573 “false or misleading” claims during his four years in office.
