Earlier this summer, Harvard Divinity School held its annual multifaith commencement service for its 2024 graduates. In addition to faculty speakers, members of the graduating class selected readings, prayers, music, and poetry to represent the students’ diverse religious and spiritual traditions. Offerings included a kirtan led by three HDS graduates.

This year’s program, held at Harvard Memorial Church, included a kirtan with Maisie Luo on harmonium, Jacob Mortimer on mridanga, and Gopal on cymbals. All are graduates of Harvard Divinity School. Jacob Mortimer is now a doctoral student at Oxford. “Their harmonious singing and musical talent create an atmosphere of spiritual unity and celebration, showcasing the rich diversity of religious expression at Harvard,” said a description of the event on the HDS Origins Club’s YouTube page. According to a Harvard website, “HDS Origins is a non-denominational spiritual group that seeks to promote spiritual well-being through yoga, meditation, music, philosophy, and delicious food.” The club also aims to promote community building based on universal spiritual values to unite and strengthen the HDS environment.
