Is remote work coming back? Starbucks CEO says the rules are for you, not me – Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), Boeing (NYSE:BA)

Brian Niccol caused a stir last week when Starbucks Corp SBUX announced the former Chipotle Mexican Grill CMG CEO would be the new boss of Starbucks. To entice Niccol to leave Chipotle and join Starbucks, the coffee giant offered him a $10 million signing bonus and another important benefit – the ability to work from home.

Niccol, who lives in Southern California, can continue to live there and travel to Starbucks’ Seattle headquarters if necessary. The agreement highlights how executive work has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic, with corporate executives allowed to work from home while many lower-level employees have been ordered back to the office.

The COVID-19 pandemic has enabled hundreds of thousands of workers to work from home, but many companies have since been pushing to get their employees back to the office.

Amazon.com Inc Amazon has pushed for its employees to return to the office, but has encountered resistance. Employees went on strike earlier this summer in protest against the company’s return-to-work policy, demonstrating how difficult it is for companies to lure their employees back to the office.

While Starbucks baristas are required to be in the office, the company also required baristas in marketing and other office jobs to come to the office three days a week—a stark contrast to Niccol’s rule.
