Is Kamala Harris pushing for a Gulf tax? What we know

Vice President Kamala Harris has talked about raising taxes on the richest Americans and the country’s major corporations, but could there also be tax increases for golfers?

Harris, who officially accepted the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination on Thursday, announced details of her economic program this week. The $5 trillion plan includes a new tax on unrealized capital gains and the elimination of the tip tax, but its introduction has sparked rumors that a golf tax could soon be on the way too.

Google searches for “golf tax” and “Kamala golf tax” skyrocketed after a golf parody account on X (formerly Twitter) posted an infographic claiming Harris plans to impose a 20 percent sales tax on “all golf purchases, including rounds, clubs, etc., to ‘tax the rich.’”

“Kamala has officially lost every golfer’s vote,” @PGATUOR wrote on Thursday.

The tweet quickly spread online, even though @PGATUOR, which has 297,600 followers, states in its bio that it posts “parodic” and “satirical” content and describes itself as “golf’s version of @TheBabylonBee and @TheOnion.”

Talk show host Janet Parshall responded to a tweet about professional golfer Rickie Fowler’s lackluster response to the Democratic National Convention with “Now that Kamala/Walz want to impose a 20 percent tax on all ‘golf-related’ purchases, here’s what…”

Journalist Clifford D. May called the bogus proposal “Stalinist” and “ignorant” and wrote: “For my part, I play on county golf courses with policemen, firemen, fast-food cooks, nurses and other members of ‘working families.'”

After users fell for @PGATUOR’s parody tweet, X added a “context” field to the post, pointing out that the infographic “came from an account, @PGATUOR, that is clearly marked as a parody.”

“Although Harris proposes several changes to the current tax system, there is no proposal to increase the federal sales tax on golf-related purchases,” the statement said.

Newsweek has reached out to the Harris team via email for comment.

While Harris’ campaign has not presented a new tax plan, it said it agreed with a number of points in President Joe Biden’s last budget proposal, which did not become law.

The proposal would impose a new tax on unrealized capital gains, which is not normally imposed in the United States except in rare cases such as futures contracts. The proposal would apply only to people who have at least $100 million in assets and do not pay at least 25 percent tax on their income.

In addition, the tax rate paid by high-income Americans would rise from 37 percent to 39.6 percent. Those earning more than $1 million a year would have to pay additional taxes on their capital gains at the same rate as their regular income, instead of the current lower rate.
