Is Helene coming to Canada after the devastation of the southeastern United States?

Helene has moved far inland over the past 12 hours, with its low pressure center currently over the southern Appalachians. Although the storm is still so far south, light cloud cover has reached southwestern Ontario and the Niagara Region. This cloud cover was responsible for a fabulous display of solar halos across the region this morning!

The storm will gradually move further northwest this afternoon before fading overnight over the Tennessee Valley, where it will meet and merge with another low. Unfortunately, the lack of movement in the storm will bring even more precipitation, further exacerbating the extreme flooding and landslide situation already experienced in the southern Appalachians and extending it to the Ohio and Tennessee valleys.

In Ontario, Helene’s cloud cover will move deeper into the province this afternoon and southwestern Ontario, from Windsor to London to Niagara, is expected to see light rain starting overnight this evening and continuing into the weekend. Much of the rest of southern Ontario can expect a dreary weekend as cloud cover consolidates.

The storm will actually move in a loop known as the Fujiwhara effect as it merges with the second low and is expected to finally begin moving east toward the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday and then northeast along the east coast, where it is expected to hit should begin to disperse.
