Iowa football strikes late and wins 38-21 against Troy

IOWA CITY – Most people involved in Iowa football probably didn’t think the Hawkeyes’ Week 3 game against Troy would have so much significance.

But after last week’s collapse of the Cy-Hawks that left Kinnick Stadium stunned, Iowa (1-1) will have to bounce back in a big way against the Trojans (0-2). Iowa did that with a 38-21 win in Iowa City, where the Register’s Chad Leistikow, Tyler Tachman and Dargan Southard are on hand.

Tricky at times, but Iowa is going full throttle in the second half. Minnesota is next.

The Hawkeyes only have to wait a few more minutes. Brendan Sullivan is now in.

Jaz Patterson gets involved. A 39-yard touchdown run decides the game.

Ethan Hurkett and Brian Allen cause a lot of problems on this last drive. Troy has to punt. The Hawkeyes can seal the deal with another TD.

Kaleb Johnson answers. A 33-yard touchdown run up the middle gives Iowa back its 10-point lead. Johnson manages 173 yards on 25 carries.

Buckle up.

There’s the man. Devonte Ross rolls over TJ Hall again and scores a long touchdown down the sideline. A 55-yard pass brings Troy back into the game.

Hello Jermari Harris. He jumps the route in front of Troy’s sideline and makes it 28 yards to the goal. Crisis in Iowa City seemingly averted.

Almost like a shutdown inning in baseball. Three TFLs from the Hawkeyes on this last drive from Troy. Kaden Wetjen fumbles the punt, but John Nestor catches it. Iowa starts at their own 42.

Some life on offense. The scoring drive covers 8 plays, 70 yards in 4:30 as Brendan Sullivan finds Addison Ostrenga for the 2-yard TD to cap it off. Another red zone appearance for Sullivan ends with a TD.

Dakin apparently dropped the ball inside the 10, but the referees ruled that the ball bounced just over the goal line. That’s a touchback.

Hawkeyes have the ball first and are close to the halfway line after a nice kick return. But Cade McNamara is sacked and has to go for the third and long attempt.

Hawkeyes sang a serenade to boos as they entered the locker room.

A cracker just before halftime. Devonte Ross returns the punt 77 yards this time and scores a touchdown. It wasn’t a great kick from Rhys Dakin and Ross carried it straight down the Iowa sideline. Quiet in Kinnick.

Two consecutive catches from the Iowa tight end for a total of 12 yards. Iowa faces a third-and-2 after the two-minute warning. First catches for Lachey since Week 1.

Ethan Conner made a 23-yard catch over Koen Entringer on third and long, but Iowa’s defense tightened up and did not allow another attempt.

A questionable call on third-and-9 ended Iowa’s advance. Drew Stevens hit the bullseye from 42 yards. Iowa at least responded to Troy’s high score with points.

And the running game continues to shine. Kaleb Johnson is approaching the 100-yard mark. Kamari Moulton just put in a long run as well. Iowa is approaching the red zone.

Iowa’s momentum is gone. Devonte Ross catches a 63-yard touchdown pass and ties it at Kinnick. TJ Hall hits a huge ball on this play. Now new game.

Well, we still have some life left. Brendan Sullivan comes in in a red zone package, only to hand it off to Kaleb Johnson for an easy 4-yard touchdown run.

Big catch on third down by Jarrett Buie, then more methodical running by Kaleb Johnson. Iowa with first-and-ten at the Troy 21.

A QB hit and a near sack force a high pass on third-and-7. A short punt gives the Hawkeyes good field position just before the halfway line. Iowa could desperately use a point.

Fun.

Cade McNamara had Luke Lachey completely free for a touchdown on third-and-short in the red zone. But McNamara didn’t see him. Kaleb Johnson then made a stop on fourth-and-1, leading to a painful turnover on downs.

A 39-yard run down the Iowa sideline.

Also forces a fumble that Troy recovers deep in their own territory. The Trojans backed off after reaching the halfway line. After the play, there was some arguing between Deavin Hillson, Karson Sharar and Troy’s punter Robert Cole. Iowa will start at their own 23.

Two Troy QB hurries forced Cade McNamara to make some difficult throws. Rhys Dakin’s punt goes into the end zone. Timeout on the field.

A great third and long catch by Jacob Gill gets the chains moving, along with a couple of good runs by Kaleb Johnson. Iowa is out near the halfway line.

The Hawkeyes will start at their own 17-yard line after a decent punt. Terrell Washington Jr. surprisingly starts as wide receiver.

Troy has lost 23 of its last 31 coin tosses. The more you know.

Here come the Hawkeyes. Despite last week’s loss, a strong performance on the way to gold.

Due to a suspension in Week 1 and a no-win in Week 2, Brown is still waiting for his first catch of the season.

Three Hawkeyes were listed on today’s Big Ten-mandated availability report.

Wide receiver Seth Anderson, linebacker Jayden Montgomery and linebacker Kelby Telander are not listed as available for Saturday’s 3 p.m. game against Troy at Kinnick Stadium.

Telander, a walk-on who played in the first two games but failed to produce statistics, is listed as out for the season. Anderson was listed as out for the first two games of the season. Montgomery was expected to contribute on special teams.

Predictions for Iowa vs. Troy

From our Chad Leistikow:

Prediction: Iowa 38, Troy 7: Here, Iowa is projected to play with fire after last week’s humiliating result. After a no-catch game against Iowa State, tight end Luke Lachey finds the end zone for the first time since the 2022 Music City Bowl. And don’t be surprised if the defense scores its first touchdown of the season, too.
