Invitation to a wedding with a formal evening dress via SMS: guests are asked to eat elsewhere and send cash

A bride and groom required their guests to wear tuxedos – and then asked those present to lower their expectations of the event itself.

One of the invitees posted screenshots of the couple’s texted outburst on a popular Reddit page dedicated to criticizing wedding etiquette. The host’s message began by calling the wedding “The Black Tie Event of the Fall!” and then listed some key things guests should keep in mind for the evening.

The reception – which they declared to be “adults only” – would feature an “open bar” with “(his and hers) mixed drinks and a selection of beer and wine.” The couple would not be serving dinner at their wedding, however, only “light snacks.” The text interpreted the lack of food at the event as an opportunity for partygoers to enjoy local cuisine.

“This would provide you and your guests with the perfect opportunity for an elegant dinner with countless options in our beautiful downtown before heading to the reception!” the invitation message said.

The text then reminded guests of the black tie dress code, asking men to wear “elegant black suits” and women to appear in “elegant black evening gowns, chic cocktail dresses or sophisticated pants suits.”

As for the gifts, the bride and groom asked that everyone come empty-handed – but not without bringing something.

“No material gifts please as we are already settled into our beautiful new home and have everything we need,” they wrote, adding: “We plan to celebrate our love with an amazing honeymoon later in the year and your financial contribution would mean the world to us as we start planning our love vacation!”

The text went on to say that one should “modestly ask for cash/a card for our card box or scan the QR code provided at the reception” to give the bride and groom money.

In an accompanying caption, the author of the Reddit post joked: “At least buy me dinner.”

In the responses in the forum, the bride and groom were accused of tactless behavior in hosting such a noble event.

“Why do people think it’s okay NOT to serve their guests? Especially with an open bar,” one commenter shared.

Others pointed out the odd way such an update is delivered: “Texted to a black tie event? And this is just an invite to the reception and not the wedding itself?” wrote another Reddit user.

Many responses unanimously pointed out that the rules and wishes of the bride and groom did not fit the tone set by the dress code.

“People don’t seem to understand that a black tie event is an experience and not just an excuse to look good,” one person responded. “There is luxury at a black tie event. There is no luxury here. People should be able to wear smart casual clothes to this chaos. Or even work clothes.”
