Injury update for Justin Herbert: NFL insider reveals the latest on the Chargers QB before the game against the Steelers

Justin Herbert is officially listed as questionable, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. There is “optimism” that the Chargers quarterback will play against the Steelers.

“There is still a question today regarding the status of Justin Herbert, the Chargers’ starting quarterback. He is officially listed as questionable due to a painful ankle sprain that caused him to miss a lot of practice this week,” Rapoport said.

“I didn’t even train on Friday, which is a rarity. My understanding is that Herbert, who is on the field now and will do his pre-game training, is optimistic about his status. Let’s say there is no firm decision, no word on whether he is definitely active or inactive, just optimism that he can play and get going despite the pain.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter later confirmed that Herbert would be active and start for the Chargers.

“Justin Herbert will officially start today for the Los Angeles Chargers, who, as mentioned, will have three active quarterbacks,” Schefter said on NFL countdown on Sunday“So Herbert will be active, along with Easton Stick and Taylor Heineke. But Herbert went out and felt good enough to give it a chance.

“The Chargers once again had a lot of plans for their quarterback. We’ll see if he can last the entire game and run the entire offense. He’s extremely tough and has played through a lot of injuries in the past, but Justin Herbert is expected to be the starter and that’s what will happen today in Pittsburgh.”

Herbert has helped the Chargers to a 2-0 start this season with wins over the Raiders and Panthers.

Los Angeles has an important game this weekend against the Steelers, who are also 2-0, but it remains to be seen if Herbert will be able to play.

The former Oregon Star has three touchdowns and one interception so far this season, as well as 24 rushing yards.

Herbert is in his fifth season in the NFL after being selected by the Chargers in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He has had an excellent start to his career, including being named the 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and being named to the 2021 Pro Bowl.

Herbert has started the 2024 season strongly, but now needs to get healthy to continue playing well.

Justin Herbert is not the only quarterback in this game who is injured on Sunday. Steelers QB Russell Wilson continues to struggle with an injury.

With that in mind, it looks like Justin Fields will be back in the starting lineup this week. Fields helped Pittsburgh get off to a 2-0 start.

“Steelers HC Mike Tomlin says Justin Fields will likely start Sunday against the Chargers as long as Russell Wilson is not available to play,” says Ari Meirov of The 33rd team posted on X. “Justin Fields has a 2-0 record as a starter.”

Although the competition wasn’t exactly strong and he got a lot of help from his defense, Fields has been so solid over the last two weeks that he definitely deserves a chance to keep the train running for the Steelers. The Chargers may be a different caliber, but if Fields gives them their first loss, who knows if Tomlin would be willing to send him back to the bench.
