A historic mansion in East Horsley is up for sale for £1.5 million after it fell into a dilapidated condition.
The Old Manor House on Ockham Road South was built around 1800 and rebuilt in 1868 by the Lovelace Estate.
The “habitable”, listed building was offered on the private market because modernisation was “too costly” for Guildford Borough Council (GBC), council documents say.
GBC purchased the property in March 1971 and subsequently rented it out as eight individual apartments to people of retirement age.
Due to massive moisture penetration, fungal infestation has developed on the walls, ceilings, floors and in the stairwell throughout the ground floor.
Richard Lucas, councillor for finance and property, said: “We would like to return this property to residential use.”
“Selling Old Manor House on the open market will achieve the best price for our residents.”
At a board meeting, city councilors agreed that it would not be cost-effective for GBC to update the historic building.
The sale of the house would also support the council’s plan to sell £50 million worth of assets over the next three years as part of its redevelopment plan.
Councillor Lucas added: “We have been informed that the site is attracting interest from builders, speculators and project developers.
“These companies are best placed to carry out the necessary renovation, repair and modernization work to return the property to residential use.”
