Due to inflation, future brides and grooms have been making cost savings they may never have expected, including reducing the rising cost of flowers for their ceremony.

According to Zola, a wedding planning website, the average cost of a wedding in 2024 will be over $30,000.

Wedding experts blame inflation, which has affected all aspects of wedding planning, even flower selection.

Some couples and florists are shocked at the rising prices.

“I knew I wanted flowers everywhere,” says bride-to-be Emily Reynolds, who was determined to create the wedding of her dreams. “I even wanted a floral chandelier that I saw on Pinterest and thought I had to have that.”

But it was the price of flowers that made her rethink her wedding plans. “Prices started at $8,000,” she says.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ consumer price index, flowers rose by 9.4 percent year-on-year, seasonally adjusted.

According to the University of Minnesota’s horticulture department, 80 percent of cut flowers in the United States are imported, and a Los Angeles florist says imported flowers last longer than domestically grown flowers.

A large percentage of cut flowers come from Colombia, Canada and Ecuador, according to the USDA.

According to Alison Franchi, owner of La Petite Gardenia, the rising costs are due to this: “There is so much going on behind the scenes. Shipping the flowers across the country or around the world.”

She says the cost of flowers has increased significantly in the 20 years she has been a florist.

According to Franchi, the cost of fuel, labor, packaging and wholesalers is the reason for rising prices, which means she has to do the same.

“It’s wedding season, it’s summer, so many people want peonies, everyone loves them, and so supply and demand… the cost has gone up significantly.”

She says, “Peonies used to cost $2.50, $3 a stem. And now they cost $7.50, $10 a stem.”

The bride-to-be Reynolds decided that the price was too high and cut away all the fresh flowers.

She chose a cheaper option – artificial flowers.

She saves nearly $7,000 and does all the preparations herself. She even posts them on her TikTok.
