Infamous 2017 comedy with 6% RT rating climbs into Netflix’s top 10 in the US

Emoji – The Movie has become a Netflix hit in the US. In the 2017 animated film, TJ Miller plays a meh emoji whose ability to show multiple expressions makes him an outsider in a strictly regulated emoji society that exists inside teenager Alex’s smartphone. The film was panned by critics, receiving 6% on Rotten Tomatoes and winning the Golden Raspberry for Worst Picture as well as three other awards, including Worst Director and Worst Screenplay.

Netflix has now calculated its official top 10 most watched films in the United States for the week of August 5-11. Emoji – The Movie landed at number 10 in the charts in the wake of its arrival on the platform. It is one of several films designed for family audiences that are included in the list, a list that also includes The Lorax by Dr. Seuss at No. 9, The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss at No. 5, Trolls join forces in third place and Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie in second place.



Why are so many people watching the Emoji Movie?

It may be surprising that so many people are watching The Emoji film on Netflix seven years later despite its dismal reception. However, there are several factors that are likely behind the film’s performance. One is the fact that The film was intended to capitalize on the emoji trend that has not abated in recent years like the fads behind similar animation titles, including 2019 Ugly dolls or 2016 Angry Birds – The Moviealthough the upcoming Angry Birds – The Movie3 could indicate that the producers believe there is interest in this property as well.


There is also the matter Emoji – The Movie Audiences never received the film quite as badly as critics. Although audiences still went after the film harshly, its audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 36%, making it six times higher than its Tomatometer rating, though it still stands firmly on Rotten. The film was also a commercial success in 2017grossed $217.8 million on a budget of $50 million, outperforming other prominent films from that year such as The purpose of a dog, John Wick: Chapter 2, PitchPerfect 3and the winner of the award for best film Shape of Water – A Journey Through America.

In addition, it remains to be seen whether Emoji – The Movie stays on the charts for more than a week. Perhaps it entered the charts simply because it’s a new title to the Netflix library in the US, and new titles usually get better as viewers with long-term subscriptions sit down to watch the streaming service’s latest offerings. If it falls off the charts later, it could indicate that there is no sustained interest in the film beyond its novelty.
