Indian woman explains why she chose the US instead of Bengaluru

“Culture, security, technology…”: Indian woman explains why she chose the US over Bengaluru

Ms Mohan said she appreciated the “wild, relentless optimism” in the United States.

A woman from Bengaluru who was unsure whether to stay in her hometown or move to the US has finally decided on America as her ‘new home’. In a long X-post, the woman, who goes by the name Viba Mohan on the microblogging site, explained why her move from Bengaluru to the US is the best decision for her personal and professional development. She gave four reasons why she has decided to make the US her home for the next few years.

Ms. Mohan cited the culture as the main reason. She appreciates the “wild, relentless optimism” in the US. “There are two things about the culture here that I love. First – the wild, relentless optimism. Everyone is excited about the possibilities, and if you fail, you just try again! The second is the craft. It’s about perfecting your craft, and that spirit is contagious,” she wrote.

The second reason is safety, both at work and on the street. “It’s a relief to be able to work without tiptoeing around a colleague who is obsessed with you and knows no boundaries. And the freedom to go for a walk or run without having to constantly look over your shoulder? It turns out that living in a safer place not only makes you feel calmer, it makes you more productive,” Ms Mohan said.

Take a look below:

Her third reason was, “The visa game is a nightmare. I knew I wouldn’t be tied down to an H1B visa or spending a fortune on a master’s degree to move here. The O1 visa and the freedom it provides has made all of that much easier.”

Most recently, she also compared the startup ecosystems of Bengaluru and San Francisco. “Bangalore has some brilliant minds, no doubt! But the tech scene? It’s often all about fintech, last mile, e-commerce – you know, the usual suspects. It’s changing, which is great, but the problems I’m most interested in? Those are still being solved in SF,” Ms. Mohan wrote.

“Bangalore will always be the place where my heart is. It’s where I made the best friends and learned the most. But for what I want to do, America is the right place right now,” she concluded.

Ms. Mohan shared the post just a few days ago. Since then, it has received more than 137,000 views. In the comments section, some users agreed with her decision, while others listed pros and cons.

“I agree with most of the points but will also throw in infrastructure and civics here,” wrote one user. “I was in the US for over 10 years and came back to India to start my own business. There are pros and cons to both. So stay where you are happy. In India the most important thing for me is that I can stay and support my mother. Also I earn a lot more now than I did in the US but the tech side in the US was great,” said another.

“Smart decision! Freedom > money > quality of life including infrastructure, climate, sun, water, nature > friends and family > health infrastructure,” commented a third.
