Indian racing driver Kush Maini suffers a terrible accident in the main race of the Azerbaijan GP. Video

Indian Formula 2 driver Kush Maini had a serious accident during the main race of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday. Kush Maini’s car, which started from fifth place, failed to gain momentum at the start of the race. As his car got stuck on the grid, many other cars managed to avoid Maini before he was hit by a car from behind, causing a serious accident and immediately triggering the red flag. Fortunately, Maini and all drivers involved in the accident escaped unhurt.

Maini, who drives for Invicta Racing, had qualified a strong fifth for the main race. After failing to score any points in Saturday’s sprint race, the Indian was hoping to make amends, but his race ended prematurely and abruptly due to the massive crash that turned several cars upside down.

Spanish driver Pepe Marti and Danish-German driver Oliver Goethe were the others who were badly hit by the accident. However, they also managed to escape without major injuries. The fact that all drivers were unharmed was another example of the increased safety in motorsport.

Maini is currently in his second season in Formula 2 and is part of the driver academy of the Alpine F1 team, which currently has Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon driving for it. However, Ocon will be replaced by Australian rookie Jack Doohan in 2025. Maini is currently battling to secure a place as Alpine’s reserve driver for next season.

After a strong start to the 2024 F2 season, Maini’s form stagnated mid-season and he currently lies 11th in the drivers’ standings. His teammate, Brazilian driver Gabriel Bortoleto, leads the championship.

After the resumption of racing, Dutchman Richard Verschoor won the main race of the Azerbaijan GP, followed by Frenchman Victor Martins and Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the latter of whom will succeed Lewis Hamilton at the Mercedes Formula 1 team in 2025.
