India vs Bangladesh, 1st Test in Chennai – The spotlight is on Shakib Al Hasan, who is not playing in his form, amid injury rumours

Missing overs and suggestions that he is battling multiple injuries have raised questions about Shakib Al Hasan’s performance in the ongoing Chennai Test against India. Shakib, who became Bangladesh’s oldest Test cricketer on Saturday, bowled seven overs on the third day after captain Najmul Hossain Shanto brought him into the attack late. Shakib was uncharacteristically weak, with Rishabh Pant hitting him for six fours and two sixes.
Shakib ended up finishing the match with the highest match figures of his Test career. It was also only the fifth time that Shakib had been left wicketless in a Test after bowling at least 20 overs. With Shanto keeping him out of the attack for most of the morning session on Saturday, Murali Kartik, the former Indian left-arm spinner, said in a broadcast that Shakib had informed him of discomfort in his spinning finger and shoulder.

“After seeing him and knowing him for so long, I went to him and asked him why he wasn’t bowling enough,” Kartik said. “And what he told me, I can totally relate to. He had a finger operation on his bowling finger, which is the tip of the finger on his left hand. It’s swollen, stiff, mobile and immobile. So he feels like he’s not getting any feeling. As a spinner, you need the feeling. Also, he has problems with his shoulder, so it’s a combination of both and it’s difficult to bowl in Test cricket where as a spinner you need that feeling.”

Shakib sustained an injury to his left index finger during Bangladesh’s World Cup match against Sri Lanka last year. He also missed the match against India during the same tournament due to a shoulder injury. The finger injury kept him out of action for a few months and then Shakib also suffered an eye problem which prolonged his absence from the Bangladesh team.

Tamim Iqbal later said in a broadcast that the visitors would be playing with an undersized bowler if Bangladesh had consciously chosen him despite the discomfort in Shakib’s spinning finger.

“Murali Kartik said that Shakib is having trouble gripping the ball due to this finger injury. If that is the case, Bangladesh is playing with four top-class bowlers. The team management should say whether they knew about this injury or not,” Tamim said.

However, BCB chief medical officer Dr. Debashish said he was not aware of any complaints from Shakib due to the finger or shoulder injury.

“Shakib had a broken finger at the World Cup in India,” he said. “Before that, he had an infection from another finger injury a few years ago. However, Shakib has not complained of any finger or shoulder injury recently. However, a broken finger can cause discomfort.”

There are some concerns that Shakib may have overextended himself in recent weeks. Last week he bowled 63.2 overs for Surrey during a county match in Taunton. He had departed for the UK from Bangladesh’s tour of Pakistan, played the match and then arrived in Chennai a day before the first Test.

Shakib failed to take a wicket in the Test and was dismissed by a mistimed reverse sweep shortly after Litton Das was dismissed in the first innings. Shakib also tries something new in his batting technique: he bites on a strap around his neck, apparently to prevent his head from falling over when playing the ball.
