Inactive Steelers players for Week 2 at the Broncos

Quarterback Justin Fields will start for the second consecutive game against the Denver Broncos today, as Russell Wilson is again listed as the third quarterback.

Fields started last week against the Falcons and has spent the entire week in practice preparing for today’s start, while Wilson is battling a calf injury sustained in training camp.

“As far as Russell’s availability goes, I’m going to list him as questionable,” coach Mike Tomlin said Friday. “So if his availability is questionable, his starting lineup is less questionable.”

“But we’ve been in that mindset all week. Like I said, we’ve been focused on getting Justin ready to play, and we’ll keep that mindset as we move toward the start of the game.”

Unlike a week ago, Fields has had more time to prepare this week, but his approach has not changed.

“I think it helps me a little bit,” Fields said. “But like I said last week, I approach the game every week with the same mindset. I’d rather be ready and just have that mindset.”

“I guess it helps a little. But for me, it’s really the same process.”

Fields, who was acquired by the Steelers in a trade with the Chicago Bears during the offseason, said the extra training sessions this week are benefiting him.

“Anytime you get reps, you get more comfortable with the game,” Fields said. “Obviously, I think that’s the case with everyone and everything we do as humans. So when you do it physically, you naturally get more comfortable with it.”

“But like I said, you just have to keep the same mindset every week because you never know what can happen.”

Receiver Roman Wilson is also inactive this week. Wilson missed the entire preseason and the season opener against the Falcons after suffering an ankle injury early in training camp.

He was hopeful he would be back on the field this week. He said he felt good in training, but after being fully involved on Thursday, he was limited on Friday and his fitness is questionable.

“It’s been good,” Wilson said of working during the week. “Just an opportunity to go out and work. I have another opportunity tomorrow. That’s what I’m focused on. So it’s going to be good.”

“I’ll take it as it comes. It’s up to the coaches. I can only focus on tomorrow. Just focus on that and be good.”

“I’ve been working hard and trying to get back into it. Even at the moment when I got injured, I felt like I could find a way to get through it and come back the same week and train the next day. So that’s just my mindset.”

With Wilson out, the Steelers have promoted receiver Ben Skowronek from the practice squad to the active/inactive roster for the game. Skowronek will return to the practice squad after the game. Skowronek was also promoted for the Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Skowronek was originally selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft, 249th overall. He appeared in 45 games for the Rams, including 12 as a starter, and caught 58 passes for 575 yards.

Guard Isaac Seumalo is still out after a chest injury, missing his second game in a row. With Seumalo out, Spencer Anderson will start again at left guard.
