Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — A woman fell into a 26-foot-deep sinkhole in downtown Kuala Lumpur on Friday after the sidewalk she was on collapsed, burying her alive, Malaysian authorities said.

The incident occurred in the Dang Wangi district of the Malaysian capital. Local police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said, according to eyewitnesses, that the woman was walking on the sidewalk when suddenly the ground gave way beneath her.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Services, which received an emergency call early Friday, said the woman was believed to be an Indian national.

However, Sulizmie said he could not confirm her identity as the investigation is still ongoing. Rescue workers have cordoned off part of the area and used an excavator to clear rubble from the hole, but there is no sign of the victim so far.

“The search will continue until the victim is found,” he said.

He declined to comment on questions about the woman’s possible condition or the cause of the incident.
