I’m so glad that most of Pixar’s upcoming movies are in my favorite genre

Summary

  • Science fiction is becoming a major focus for Pixar; three of four upcoming films fall into this genre.
  • Toy Story 5
is not science fiction, but it continues a popular franchise.
  • Pixar’s mixed results with science fiction, such as the disappointment with
    light year
means that his upcoming projects may not live up to expectations.

I am a big fan of many Pixar projects, but the fact that most of the studio’s upcoming films all fall into my favorite category is a huge bonus that increases my anticipation before their release. I admit that not every Pixar film resonates with me, but I found most of them thoroughly entertaining. Outside of Pixar, my viewing habits fall very much into a certain genre, which is why I’m so excited that Pixar’s immediate future is even more to my taste.

Sequels have been Pixar’s main source of revenue in recent years, and while I love seeing some of its franchises grow, the original stories often have the potential to shine much brighter. Thankfully, there is as much attention paid to continuing existing stories as there is to establishing new narratives featuring the signature quirky characters that I and so many others have grown to love. Oddly enough, 75% of Pixar’s upcoming films have something in common.

Here are all the upcoming Pixar movies and TV shows coming out over the next few years, from new originals like Elio to sequels like Toy Story 5.

3 of the 4 upcoming Pixar films are science fiction

Pixar seems to focus on a specific genre

I love science fiction and I love Pixar movies. However, the two don’t collide very often. As I look to the immediate future, that rarity is a thing of the past, and I’m so excited. First of all, there is Eliowhich is scheduled for release on June 13, 2025. The film is probably the most ambitious science fiction project Pixar has in the works, although it also features the studio’s iconic playfulness. Unfortunately, the other two science fiction films don’t have set release dates, but one is more definitive than the other.

funnel will be released in spring 2026which ensures that my Pixar/sci-fi fix will be satisfied for the next few years. The story revolves around the transfer of human consciousness into animal-like machines. If I didn’t know it was a Pixar film, I would assume the premise belonged to a dark dystopian neo-noir film. Finally The Incredibles 3 was announced at D23 in 2024, but only confirmed as “Coming soon.” If I had to guess, I would assume that the third part of the superhero trilogy will be released in 2027.

According to the Economic Times, Pixar has a “
confirmed but not assigned release date
” of 18 June 2027, which could accommodate
The Incredibles 3
‘s publication.

“Toy Story 5” excites me just as much (even though it’s not a science fiction film)

Toy Story is my favorite Pixar franchise

Woody and his friends look at Bonnie on her tablet in the teaser for “Toy Story 5”

The only confirmed non-science fiction film in the works from Pixar is Toy Story 5. Compared to the other upcoming projects, it may stand out because it is not science fiction, but that doesn’t stop me from excitedly anticipating its release. Toy history is by far my favorite Pixar franchiseand although I initially had a bad feeling about continuing the story, Toy Story 3When I saw the ending, I was surprised that the fourth film was, in my opinion, a worthwhile effort. It wasn’t perfect, but it was still very good.

I don’t want to try to outdo what the rest of the
Toy history
movies, I just want it to be a fun ride.

The confirmed Toy Story 5 Details of D23 all sound like a lot of fun. Not only does the sequel deal with modern challenges like screen addiction, but the idea of a band of renegade Buzz Lightyears sounds equally menacing and hysterical. I am beyond the point of thinking Toy history should endas many fans believe, and I am just ready to enjoy another adventure with Woody and his friends. I don’t want to try to outdo what the rest of the Toy history movies, I just want it to be a fun ride.

Pixar’s mixed results with science fiction still worry me

WALL-E is great, but Lightyear is not

Pixar’s rare forays into science fiction were not very consistent. Therefore, I try to temper my expectations for the three upcoming films in this genre. The Incredibles is practically a perfect film for me, so the studio started off strong with its first science fiction project. WALL E meets the same standard as Pixar’s animated superhero film, so that’s another tick for the anticipation of Elio, funnelAnd The Incredibles 3Unfortunately, Pixar’s other two science fiction films fall far short of what I know the studio is capable of, and that worries me.

The long-awaited arrival of The Incredibles 2 2018 brought with it many expectationsmany of which remained unfulfilled. I thought it was okay, but it could have been so much better. The same goes for 2022’s light yearThe Meta Toy history Prequel got in its own way by trying to tie itself in too creatively to the main canon, which distracted from the plot. I liked it, but it wasn’t as good as The Incredibles or WALL E. With a little luck Elio, funnelAnd The Incredibles 3 all meet the standards of Pixar‘s first two science fiction works.
