I’m an Etiquette Expert – 2 Mistakes Wedding Guests Make With Their Outfit & You May Have Seen Some Culprits This Summer

Choosing an outfit for a wedding as a guest can be difficult, especially because you don’t want to make a mistake and choose the wrong one.

Luckily, etiquette expert Myka Meier has two top tips to help you avoid any fashion faux pas this summer.

Myka, founder of Beaumont Etiquette, uploaded a video saying, “Don’t make these two mistakes at a summer wedding.”

Her first tip was to avoid wearing pale pink as a guest.

The New York-based expert explained: “Okay, let’s first look at the following.

“You think pale pink is a safe color choice? Um, actually, it’s the color of the season for brides.

“Imagine you arrive at an event and the bride is there. She is wearing the same or a similar dress as you. You definitely don’t want that.”

Maybe you have a beautiful floral dress that you’ve been meaning to wear for a special occasion, but Myka advises you to stay away from it.

The etiquette pro continued, “Secondly, look at this, you might think it’s safe. Floral print, right, summer?

“It’s actually the worst thing you can do because it’s really trendy among brides this year.

“So avoid floral patterns on a white background, avoid pale pinks or sheer colors and you’ll be on the right page.”

It goes without saying that when choosing the color of clothing for wedding guests, you should definitely avoid white.

Dress drama for wedding guests

Bridal stylist Anny Choi told Vogue: “The simple answer is ‘no’, unless the invitation requires it.”

She pointed out that some couples may choose to have an all-white party on the big day or at the events leading up to it.

Anny said that in this case, you should choose a plain white outfit and not a white one with floral print, as many brides choose that.

However, for a typical wedding, you should never choose white, even variations like cream, ivory and beige.

It can be a grey area if the dress has a patterned design that contains some white.

Anny said: “As long as the main color is not perceived as white, everything is fine.”

She advises you to also check how your outfit looks in photos, as some shades of blush, for example, can appear white.

Stylist Micaela Erlanger added: “Avoid colors that really stand out unless it’s a wild disco party.”

“Avoid neon colors, avoid red, avoid anything super loud. Unless, of course, your boyfriend is getting married at a rave party. And don’t get me wrong – I’m sure it’s happened before!”

As many people say about wedding outfits: If you have to ask, the answer is probably no.

Etiquette for wedding guest outfits

If you can’t decide on a dress for wedding season, here are a few rules on what not to wear so you don’t get into trouble.

  • According to legend, wearing red at a wedding means that you have slept with the groom.
  • Casual clothing such as jeans and flip-flops should generally be avoided.
  • Any color that could be perceived as white or cream – even if it is not.
  • Most would agree that the cleavage needs to be covered.
  • Unless you are the bride, wearing white is an absolute no-go.
