Ikea’s warehouse inventory drones will fly alongside workers in the US

Ikea has launched an upgrade to its inventory-counting drone system—and now it’s coming to the U.S. The Swedish furniture chain announced that the autonomous drones will soon be working alongside workers at its distribution center in Perryville, Maryland, where Ikea began installing them this summer.

The Verity-branded drones also come with a new AI-powered system that allows them to fly around warehouses 24/7. This means they now work alongside human workers, helping to count inventory and determine if anything is in the wrong place. Previously, the drones only flew outside of operating hours.

Parag Parekh, chief digital officer for Ikea Retail, says in the press release that the flights will be planned in advance and that the drones will use a “custom indoor positioning system to navigate higher warehouse levels.” They will also have an obstacle detection system that will allow them to change their flight paths to avoid collisions. Ikea is also working on several upgrades for the drones, including the ability to inspect loading units and shelves.

So far, Ikea’s fleet consists of more than 250 drones operating in 73 warehouses in nine countries. Ikea first launched its drone system in 2021 in partnership with Verity and expanded it to more locations across Europe last year. Now Ikea plans to bring its AI-powered drones to more distribution centers in Europe and North America, which the company says will help “reduce the ergonomic burden on (human) employees, allowing them to focus on easier and more interesting tasks.”
