If you’re a sports fan with DirecTV (or without), you’re in trouble

1. Here’s what I wrote in Tuesday’s Traina Thoughts:

“Quick prediction for those of you who have DirecTV: The broadcast dispute between DirectTV and the Disney-owned channels, including ESPN, will be settled on Monday right before the Jets-Niners Week 1 Monday Night Football Game.”

Shortly after our publication, DirecTV CFO Ray Carpenter held a conference call on the broadcast dispute with Disney, which resulted in Disney-owned channels, including ESPN, being taken off the air.

Now I’m not so sure if sports fans with DirecTV subscriptions will be able to watch the Jets-Niners game in Week 1.

diversityBrian Steinberg tweeted throughout the call, and an agreement between DirecTV and Disney seems unlikely. Not at all.

While the prospect of NFL fans missing the first Monday night game of the season and college fans missing an entire Saturday of football are the most important aspects of this dispute for our purposes, what DirecTV is trying to accomplish with the package concept is significant.

Those of us who still have cable and satellite TV pay a lot of money every month for a lot of channels we never watch. But that’s exactly what the package does. It forces customers to pay an exorbitant amount for a few hundred channels, even though most people watch a quarter of those channels at most.

In the age of streaming and cable TV, DirecTV wants to change the model.

Look at those quotes. No matter what you think of DirecTV, cable, streaming, etc., it’s hard to argue with any of what Carpenter said there. Cable and satellite customers have been saying for several years that it doesn’t make sense to pay these companies for packages while they also have to pay for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and so on and so forth.

But executives at those companies have rarely publicly sided with consumers, as Carpenter did Tuesday. Maybe he’s bluffing. Maybe DirecTV will cave in around 8 p.m. ET on Monday when the Jets-Niners game starts.

But I don’t think so now. This promotion fight feels different. And it will have a huge impact on sports fans.

If you’re not a DirecTV subscriber and think this doesn’t affect you, just remember one thing: restaurants and bars all rely on DirecTV.

2. Since the game between the Ravens and the Chiefs is only two days away, I would like to share with you some recent episodes of SI Media with Jimmy Traina This would be good music to listen to in preparation for the NFL season.

All episodes of SI Media with Jimmy Traina are available on Apple, Spotify and YouTube.

TOM BRADY:

GREG OLSEN:

KIRK HERBSTREIT:

JASON McCOURTY:

A new episode of SI Media with Jimmy Traina will be interviewed early Thursday morning by the moderator of ESPN’s Monday evening countdownScott Van Pelt.

3. Let me be clear: NFL referees are incompetent. MLB referees are downright unlikable.

Check out this pathetic performance by home plate umpire Doug Eddings, who was completely thrown off guard when Pirates rookie pitcher Paul Skenes had the nerve to walk off the mound after he thought he had struck out a batter.

This reaction from Eddings is abnormal and crazy.

4. The first episode of ESPN’s revamped The Sports reporterwhich is now a YouTube show, has been discontinued.

The good thing: Al Michaels, Joe Buck, Mike Tirico and Kevin Harlan are there and it’s great fun to listen to the four of them.

The bad: This does not look at all like the classic Sports reporter show that we remember. This just seems like an interview show and the company has decided to call it The sports reporters for a cache.

5. CBS has done a good job with these videos over the last few weeks. We saw Kevin Harlan try to identify some of his memorable decisions. We saw Ian Eagle reveal his pen addiction. And here’s Jim Nantz with Tony Romo trying to identify some of his memorable decisions.

For the record, THAT will always be Nantz’s most memorable call.

6. I think Tom Brady will be ready to commentate on games for Fox this season.

7. RANDOM VIDEO OF THE DAY: We’re releasing memorable and meaningful NFL videos all week to celebrate the start of the season. Today I show you Bengals coach Sam Wyche chastising the Cincinnati crowd for throwing snowballs while insulting Cleveland.
