If possible, stay in air-conditioned areas as temperatures are approaching 100 degrees

With temperatures forecast to range between 32 and 38 degrees Celsius, with highs reaching 38 degrees Celsius, Montgomery County residents are advised to stay in their homes if possible and watch over their elderly or isolated neighbors.

County facilities, including libraries, recreation and senior centers, and regional service centers, are open during regular business hours and may offer respite from the heat. Outdoor and indoor pools are open, but admission fees apply.

Ride On buses will offer free water to passengers on Wednesday until supplies run out.

Colesville United Methodist Church is keeping its doors open for anyone who needs to cool off. Located at 52 Randolph Road in Silver Spring, the church is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the temperature reaches 90 degrees or more.

Registration is not required, but participants must provide their name and address, as well as an emergency contact person. Pets are not welcome, with the exception of guide dogs.

The Shepherd’s Table dining room at Progress Place on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring is open until 8 p.m. Visitors are welcome to come in and rest inside.

The district advises residents to stay indoors as much as possible. It is recommended to take a cool shower or bath or go to an air-conditioned room. Use the stove and oven less.

  • Be sure to avoid strenuous activities that may lead to excessive sun exposure, such as exercise and gardening. If you must perform strenuous activity, do it during the coolest time of day, which is usually before 9 a.m.
  • Drink plenty of water. Dehydration, cramps, exhaustion or heat stroke can all result from insufficient fluid intake. Water is the safest drink.
  • Avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages.
  • Wear appropriate sun protection when outdoors. Light clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are strongly recommended.
  • Never leave pets, small children or elderly people in a vehicle for ANY period of time, even with the window open, as the temperature in parked cars can reach 54.4 °C in just a few minutes.
  • Monitor high-risk individuals. People most at risk for heat-related illness include:
    • Infants and children up to four years of age;
    • Persons aged 65 and over;
    • People who are ill or taking certain medications; and
    • People who are overweight.
